Discontinuance of Concordance and Definitions Updates

The concordance and definitions portions of the ANCSA Resource Center have not been updated since 1998. Amendments to ANCSA in 1998 and afterwards have necessitated substantial revisions to the concordance, which would require a significant amount of effort to pluck words from the new language to add to the appropriate pages of the concordance and to delete words from the concordance that were stricken. This daunting task has been postponed until enough time could be found to undertake the project.

We have now concluded that there is another solution that will be more timely than updating the concordance and definitions each time ANCSA is amended -- internet search engines.

By using a search engine to search for a specific word or phrase in the ANCSA Resource Center, you should be able to find all statutes, as well as other resource materials, that use the particular word or phrase. In effect, you can create your own concordance for just the word or words you want. By using the boolean capabilities of the search engine, you also can find more complicated word patterns than are apparent from the concordance, such as finding all references to "subsurface estate."

The concordance and definitions portions of the ANCSA Resource Center will be retained. At times you may find them more convenient than using the internet search engines. For more recent information, however, you should use an internet search engine.

This page illustrates how to search for all ANCSA resources that use the word "mortgage," using the Google internet search engine. (All images can be enlarged by clicking on them.) Similar searches can be done on other internet search engines of your choice.

[first]   First, go to the Google home page, at http://www.google.com/

You should see something like this [Google step 1] (click image to enlarge)

[second]   Click on "Advanced search", and that will bring up a form.

[third]   Fill in the word or words you want to search for. In this case, we are searching for all references to "mortgage"

[fourth]   Fill in the URL box with "lbblawyers.com" That will limit the search to the ANCSA Resource Center.

The form should look like this [Google step 2] (click image to enlarge)

[fifth]   Click on the "Google Search" button. This will search the entire ANCSA Resource Center for "mortgage" and report back the pages that include the word and some surrounding text.

The report should look like this [Google step 3] (click image to enlarge)

[sixth]   Click on any of the reported sites, and your web browser will take you to the section or page that uses the word. Note, however, that the browser may not take you to the specific subsection using the word. You may be able to use the "find" feature (usually under the "edit" menu selection) of your browser to search for the word in the displayed document.

That's all there is to it!
